International students looking to study in Germany will generally need a visa. This excludes students from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

International students from other countries generally need to apply for a visa before arrival. Please contact the German embassy in your home country and apply for a student visa or an applicant visa.

As soon as you have received the admission letter, please prepare the necessary documents for your visa application and then schedule an appointment for it.

Please notice, that the request for your visa-application should be at least three months before the start of the planned trip.

! Apply for the Visa Early: From experience, we can say that some embassies have a heavy workload and it may take several months until applicants get an appointment. Therefore, international students who are required to have a visa, should take time into account and schedule an appointment with the embassy or consulate to apply for a visa as early as possible. It is recommendable to inform yourself about the visa procedure as soon as you intend to apply for a study in Germany!
